One of the hardest concepts for me to get my head around when I first started taking a closer look at Personal Growth/Empowerment and all this Law Of Attraction stuff, was the concept of being responsible for my reality.  At first I just let those words wash over me without taking too much notice of them.  Then one day, out of the blue (read – when I was ready) the words really struck a chord with me.  If I remember correctly, it was quite a nasty sounding chord.

I really got myself into quite a tangle over those words.  How, I reasoned, could I possibly be responsible for my reality.  I mean, I don’t want all this nasty stuff in my life, I didn’t sack myself from that job or leave that relationship… I mean, I’m the victim here!  And so it went on.  I have to tell you right here and now that I was so totally wrong that I cannot now imagine how I could have taken that approach at all.

Taking responsibility for the ‘things’ in your life that are good is really quite easy.  We win a raffle prize and we just smile and say “Hey, I’m lucky” – this is a positive affirmation of something that can be true in your life.  We get a promotion in our job and we smile and say “Hey, I deserve this, I’ve worked hard and deserve this recognition” – another positive affirmation of something that can be true in your life.  Or not.

Taking responsibility for ‘things’ in your life that are not so good, or even bad, is not so easy.

We get looked over for the promotion and it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking “jobs for the boys” or something equally disempowering – blaming someone or something else for your sense of failure or rejection can be a negative affirmation of something that can be true in your life.

How about the time you bought a car, holiday, hi-tech equipment etc. that turned out to be a real lemon, or the dealer somehow took you for a ride and you paid way too much for it?  How hard did you kick yourself in the pants over that one?  Did the words “I’m so stupid for falling for that old trick, or I just don’t know how to pick a quality vehicle from a bad one” come into your mind?  Did you call yourself stupid or dumb or some other demeaning name – that could be another negative affirmation of something that can be true in your life.

The main Truth here is the one you tell yourself, either positive or negative.  These are the seeds which you have sown and from those seeds will your reality grow.

You will reap the harvest of your thoughts and your self-talk (affirmations).

The thing that gave me some clarity in all of this and gave me a new way to look at me being the creator of my reality, was the concept that, even if I were not immeditately responsible for the ‘things happening’ in my life, I am absolutely responsible for my response to them.  I am responsible for my next move, my next word, my next action, my next thought.  And so are you…
